Training Options

STANDARD FIRST AID

Standard First Aid focuses on care for emergencies throughout the body and because of the length of the course, it allows for enough hands-on practice time to instill the confidence needed to use the skills in real life.  We include CPR Level C and AED training at no additional cost because this level focuses on providing care for adults, children, and infants and we want first aiders to feel confident helping anyone in need.

Time Frame:

14-16 Training Hours (not including breaks)

ex. 8:30am – 4:30pm both days, including two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch each day, equals 14 training hours.

Certificate:

Successful participants receive a nationally recognized Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid with CPR Level C and AED certificate which is valid for 3 years.  The certificate is delivered as an electronic document directly to each participant for easy management and employer/school verification.  This new electronic system has replaced the old wallet card.

EMERGENCY FIRST AID

Emergency First Aid focuses on care for airway, breathing, and circulatory emergencies as well as wound care, diabetic shock, and seizure care.  We include CPR Level C and AED training at no additional cost because this level focuses on providing care for adults, children, and infants and we want first aiders to feel confident helping anyone in need.  Because of the short length of the course and the amount of material to cover, it is a FULL and FAST-PACED day!  It’s not the right fit for everyone, so please also check out the section on Standard First Aid which is our number one recommendation to all of our clients.

Time Frame:

8 Training Hours (not including breaks)

ex. 8:30am – 5:30pm, including two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch, equals 8 training hours.

Recertification Courses

This can be a tricky corner of the first aid world to navigate so here is some helpful information…

1.  Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C recertification courses are nearly identical to the original courses.  Because recertification involves some rather significant administrative hassles for many teams  (see point #3) and taking the original course does not, we have consistently found that simply repeating the course every three years is the best fit for most people.

2.  Standard First Aid recertification courses look significantly different from the original.  This one day course focuses mainly on skill review and changes to first aid that have happened since the original certification.  At the end of the course, participants will write a test based on the full content of a Standard First Aid course even if it wasn’t covered during the day.  Participants in a recertification course are expected to remember and feel confident about the course material from their last training three years earlier.  So a lot of material is not covered, but will be tested on, and what material is covered moves at a fast pace.  Aside from the administrative hassles of preparing for a recertification course (see point #3), a lot of participants find this particular recertification course to be stressful and it has a higher failure rate than the full 2-day course.  We believe that first aiders are meant to be equipped to perform first aid in real life, not just carry a first aid card, so we always recommend taking the full 2-day course each year.  This way participants are not rushed, get a full review, and are actually ready to use their training when needed.

3.  If you would like to pursue a recertification course for your team we do provide them upon request, but be prepared that the following 4 requirements must be met or participants will not be allowed to participate in the training:

1) Each participant must have a current Standard First Aid with CPR Level C and AED certificate.  It can not be expired by even one day.

2) Each participant must currently be fully certified (you can not recertify a recertification).

3) Each participant’s certificate must be issued from the Canadian Red Cross.  We can not recertify another organization’s training.

4) Each participant must provide proof of certification before the class starts.  We strongly recommend submitting photocopies of your group’s certificates to our office before your recertification date.  This helps us to catch problems before the day of the course and avoid stress and disappointment.

If you still wish to pursue a recertification course please contact our office and we will be happy to speak further.

Baby Showers - Special Event

When your infant is choking it can feel like your own heart has stopped.  We provide special presentations at baby showers demonstrating for Mom and her friends how to help a choking infant and what to do if CPR is required.  The instructor then remains for an additional period of time to provide a practice opportunity out of the way of the festivities for anyone who would like hands-on experience.  When someone has the knowledge and skills to respond to this emergency it takes away a great deal of fear and replaces it with a calm confidence.  Book us for the baby shower you are planning and give Mom the gift of peace of mind.

Time Frame:

1 Hour

The presentation itself is approximately 20 minutes.  The instructor will then remain onsite for up to 40 minutes in order to answer additional questions and provide an opportunity for guests to practice if they wish.

Fees:

$375 +tx flat rate

Travel charges may apply for baby showers outside of the Greater Ottawa Region

Participant Requirements:

This presentation is appropriate for all ages

There are no minimum or maximum participant requirements

Space Requirements:

It is ideal to place the instructor somewhere where they are visible to everyone, and ideally with the Mother-to-be in a front row seat.  The instructor will provide a standing demonstration of assisting a conscious choking infant and will use a folding table surface (which we provide) to demonstrate infant CPR clearly for the group.  After the demonstration, you can point the instructor in the direction of the best place to make themselves available for anyone who would like to speak further or practice the skills.  It is ideal for this space to have a hard table surface available or open floor space for practicing CPR.

Additional Notes:

Mom, Dad, and anyone they identify as a potential caregiver for their child will be given top priority if they have questions or want to practice.

Certificate:

Mom (and Dad if present) will receive a One Prepared Mom! (or One Prepared Dad!) congratulatory certificate from Open Door Development.
